The original tree huggers there was one person called Amrita in Rajasthan in the 16th century Um and uh uh there was a guru called Jambboji who came up with a religion the Bishnoi religion and there are now millions of Bishnois and it’s the only great religion It’s not very well known uh but it’s but it’s one of the great world religions and it’s the only one that has saving the environment at its very core because it was developed in Rajasthan by a guru uh during a time of terrible drought So a third of the 29 commandments are about very practical about the environment For example you may not cut a green tree So here we had uh um the Maharaja sending a whole group of guys with axes out to fell these trees very special desert trees to burn to make lime to build his palace And a very uh normal peasant woman came out from the village saw this happening and put her arms around the tree and said “My life for a tree is a cheap price to pay.” And they cut her head off Uh and she and the Bishnoys take trees and animals as equivalent to their children Uh so this for her was a this sort of act that she would have done to save her child Her daughters came out and they did the same thing to them after they hugged the trees and then 300 and some people came out and they cut off all of their heads Um word goes back to the Maj Maharaja who I suppose decided um that it wasn’t good PR for him um and stopped the slaughter and from then on the Bishnoi have been known as people you don’t mess with But they come up with all of these things So these are largely peasant farmers I mean there are doctors and so on in the in the cities but mostly they’re peasant farmers still and they all do stuff They never say we’re too busy They go plant trees in the desert Uh they take injured antelopes in and nurse them Um the young men set up something called a tiger force and there are these endangered antelopes uh guys come out in jeeps with rifles illegally to hunt and kill them And these young men with no uh rifles go and chase them uh and chase them away and sometimes get killed but they still keep doing it And it’s like wow uh Earth Day is coming up These are my Earth Day heroes They get up every morning and do something uh to save nature and it’s very very clear and then they pass it on to their kids So for me they’re an incredibly inspiring example.
